This is the ‘tongue in cheek’, ‘cut-the-crap diet’ that really works, if you stick to it forever, you will continue to loose weight and keep it off forever.

Why pay out for expensive pills that rarely work or expensive ‘low-fat diet meals’ that you really cannot afford? If you really, honestly and truly want to loose weight all you have to do is ‘cut-the-crap’ and keep moving.

…and

You don’t have to join expensive weekly slimming clubs where you are praised when you loose weight and humiliated when you gain.

Why I decided to ‘cut-the-crap’

As a teenager, I always struggled with my weight. My older sister was tall and sickeningly slim (still is) but I didn’t have the height and always looked and felt ‘dumpy’. Into my twenties, practically anorexic I managed to maintain my weight between 6 and 7 stone, after the birth of my son I managed to maintain my weight between 7 and 8 stone and I was comfortable.

Ha ah but the years take their toll. I’m fifty now and about five years ago I moved house, from Town to Country and although I opted to be green and travel to work by bus, it seems that I never have to walk very far. Even though I live in the country, go for walks along the canal at the weekends, and do the occasional sponsored walk, I do not seem to be getting enough exercise during the week while I am working. Sad but true! I get a lift to the bus station; I work 2 minutes from the stop where I get off the bus, vice versa…hence, the pounds just piled on almost without me noticing.

During those five years I didn’t get on the scales so I must have known what was happening somewhere in the depths of my conscience with depression building while munching on bars of chocolate and crisps every day in between breakfast, lunch and my evening meal.

Then I saw a picture of myself on a digital camera and was shocked. Later that day, I stood gingerly on the scales and nearly died when the reading said ‘11 stone’. I have never been that heavy not even when I was carrying my one and only child. I felt fat!! I had gone from size 8’s to 10’s to 12’s and was slipping rapidly into size 14 (UK sizes obviously).

That night I made my decision. I was going to ‘cut-the-crap’. I pondered shamefully over my unhealthy usual diet and snacks. Out went dairy products, white bread and potatoes, chocolate, crisps, biscuits, cakes, any other sweet sugary things including numerous drinks especially ‘Lucozade’ which is loaded with sugar and any other fizzy, sugary drinks; and in came yoghurts, fresh fruit, vegetables, water, probiotic drinks, fruit juice (unsweetened and not made from concentrate), tortilla wraps, rice and rice cakes (very slightly salted). The great thing is that I can have a good meal in the evening (no sweet stuff) and at the weekend, I treat myself to a bar of dark chocolate, a small cake, or an ice-cream (not all at once). I look forward to my treat. You have to give yourself a treat at least once a week otherwise this diet will not work.

I cut out alcohol, all alcohol because I could never remember which put weight on. I also cut down on my coffee and tea intake to almost half the norm. Usually I need at least three mugs of coffee to get me going in a morning I am now down to one before I leave home, another when I get to work and then nothing until I get home after 7pm. I love black coffee, strong black coffee as mentioned in a previous hub ‘Leni Sands, Coffee Addict’, so this is quite an achievement for me (gives self a pat on back). Although coffee and Tea are both diurectics, too much is not good for you so cutting down is really useful especially when you are on the ‘cut-the-crap diet’.

Rice cakes have been my ‘saving grace’. I have them for breakfast and lunch but in the evening I have a proper meal using smaller portions of everything (I pile my extras on his plate (ha ha). If, I want to snack, I snack on fruit and rice cakes and guess what, rice cakes don’t cost a fortune? Home Bargains and B&M’s do good sized packs for a mere 39p. 3 x 39p per week on snacks has got to be a good thing, hasn’t it? The thing to remember about rice cakes is that they are full of carbs and essential fats. Rice cakes replace bread as well so you are on a winner all the way and you can dress them up with low fat spreads – or anything you normally use to make a sandwich. I even dip them in my low fat soups.

  • Watch those low fat foods, though, some of them, especially the ones that say ‘as part of a calorie controlled diet’, are not as low fat as you think and watch the salt content!

How long does it take?

This all started in April and it is now early in September and I have lost 16lbs. Yes, I know this diet is slow but because you change your eating habit’s you are more likely to keep it off. If you loose weight to quickly you put it straight back on. With this diet, I don’t feel hungry at anytime and I don’t feel as if I am missing out on anything.

Exercise!?!

I still don’t get the exercise I should get to help tone my body but I have started to concentrate more on pulling my stomach muscles in and the more I do this the tighter they will become. Exercise would probably tighten up all the flabby bits and as soon as I have the time I will make sure I do it but my job means that I run up and down the stairs all day so at least four days a week I get some exercise even if it isn’t the right kind of exercise.

To conclude

In conclusion, the ‘cut-the-crap diet’ is straightforward, no need for special recipes, no need for expensive clubs and foods, no need for praise (except self praise) and no need for public humiliation, you can give yourself enough of that when you add a couple of pounds accidentally by eating something you know you shouldn’t.

All you need to do is just…

The fresh fruit and veg you can purchase at the end of the day at your local supermarket where you will pay much less for it. Low fat foods are ok in moderation but read the packet to check fat and salt contents and try to avoid those that say …’as part of a calorie controlled diet’.

  • You don’t have to starve yourself or spend loads of money to loose weight just eat sensibly and….

CUT THE CRAP!!

I hope you enjoyed this hub.

I take no responsibility for the accuracy of the information in this hub – the only proof I have is it worked for me.

Good luck with your weight loss. If it don’t work you ain’t doin’ it right!! Stop cheatin’. (lol).

I am going to start this tomorrow! A useful topic which is close to people's hearts (whether they admit it or not). Articles on this topic are often rather patronising leaving you feeling like a failure before you've even begun! Nice informal tone to this hub. I'll let you know if I find it effective too!

Peanutritious - I like informal it means no rules apply. This is the no fail diet because you are in control. Only you can 'cut the crap'out of your diet!! See you Tuesday. In the meantime why not have a look at other people hubs and make some comments - follow a few while you're at it. Go to your account and just below 'answers' etc., you will see a section that says 'hop some hubs' - go on make some friends!!

right on Leni. I have turned to fruit and rice cakes lately too. I love sweets and they are truly my downfall. I eat a lot of fish, chicken, and vegetables as well. Oatmeal for breakfast with blueberries. But I am not going to be successful unless I get out there and walk every day. I am a writer, and writers sit on their butts in front of a computer all day. So, now I have to have some discipline, a word I truly hate. But, I either remain looking like Jabba the Hut, or walk and eat right. Thanks for sharing and cutting out all the crap!

Wonderful hub Leni, we moved to the country 3 years ago and work from home, and I was amazed when I weighted myself recently how much weight I had put on!

Some great advice here, which I intend to follow, I think you are 'spot on'!

Great article Leni. I am really glad to hear that you've found something that works for you. I think that is the most important.

lambservant, my biggest downfall is and always will be cheese & onion crisps. It is so hard to resist them but I do...try very hard (lol). Haven't had any crisps for weeks now and it is amazing how the weight comes off when I don't touch crisps especially. Thanks for your comment, much appreciated.

Movie Master, thanks for voting my hub up and for your comment. I always thought that moving to the country meant healthy living but you really do have to work at it. Good luck with your weight loss.

Thanks Marlin 55, glad you like the article. I enjoyed writing it and sharing it. It does work for me and I am sure when everyone else 'cuts the crap' out their diet that it will work for them, too. Thanks for your comment.

Hahahahaha! this is a diet I'm on right now. It's true that i am feeling healthier, but it does cut the joy out of a life a bit :) I went to the extreme of also cutting out all meat products, though I am continuing to eat fish. Like you, I wish I could get more exercise into my regimen, perhaps next year :)

leni sands profile image

leni sands Hub Author 8 months ago

PiaC - I haven't eaten meat for years, I do indulge in chicken and turkey and occasionally fish - but not red meat in any way shape or form. Exercise? My mother always told me 'never put off till tomorrow what you can do today' ah but another somebody sang 'tomorrow never comes' - I need exercise now but who these days can find the time??? Yes, perhaps next year!!

Hi Leni, what a brilliant hub, full of real advice that can work long term. The fad diets are a waste of time and i believe that it's eighty percent food intake and twenty percent exercise. I was asked to play indoor soccer about six years ago when i was 53. I was about four kilos over my ideal weight. I decided to do exactly what you have done and the weight went quite quickly. I am a brickie don't forget. I eat 95% healthy food and only have a treat occasionally

attemptedhumour - Thanks for your kind words and I totally agree that fad diets don't work; if you loose weight too quickly you will only have to do it all again when several months down the line you've gained more weight than you were before you started dieting - that is why this 'cut the crap' diet is so perfect. You loose the weight at a much slower pace eating sensible foods so it's easier to keep it off. Well done for doing this diet before I did the hub. I got so fed up of people telling me to do this and that (fitness clubs / slimming clubs, etc.) that I decided to do it my way and hey presto...a fitter, healthier, back in size 10's self has emerged along with increased self esteem, self worth and confidence. Thanks for sharing your experience.

You are so right! No one wants to hear it but your way works.

Congratulations on your weight loss that seems to be a lifestyle change.

elizabethmcgrif, thank you for your comment.

I decided to write this article because I got really annoyed when I heard that someone had joined a slimming club and been publicly humiliated because they put a couple of pounds on one week. Why pay to attend a meeting to have to suffer that? When they loose weight on the 'slimming plan' they are praised and given a round of applause, when they put it on they are shamed. It's cruel and another reason why people don't stick to the diet plan, end up lacking self worth, confidence and self esteem then go on a binge eating spree. At least with the 'cut the crap' diet there is none of that.

Weight is such a personal thing, isn't it? Yes, my weight loss has been a lifestyle change but it has also given me back that little bit of 'me' I lost over the years.

Thanks again.

So it is all about diet and not exercise. I believe on your hub, maybe the secret is just as simple of that one;)

Thanks for sharing it.

I could not stick to only having a treat at the weekends, life is to short for such sacrifice and I adore food, I am trying losing weight too so I admire your willpower. I have written a couple of hubs about weight loss to perhaps you would have a look and let me know what you think.

leni sands profile image

leni sands Hub Author 8 months ago

naturalsolutions - it is mainly about diet, it is also about moderate exercise to keep your body toned without going over the top, however I managed to loose the weight without doing much in the way of exercise because quite frankly I don't have the time.

If you don't want flabby bits I have it on good authority that stretching is the way to go. Pulling in tummy muscles and reaching for the sky - stretching your body, arms and legs as far as you can as often as you can. I don't know how successful that is yet I have only just started but I will keep you all informed, maybe write a hub about it.

Well Christmas is done - just gotta get New Year over with and I can start the 'cut the crap' diet all over again. This time with more determination. I will reach my goal in 2012 and get my weight down to a more desirable level (for me). So on January 2nd 2012 I will head over to my favourite store and stock up on the rice cakes. Happy New Year guys!!
